Often times, suanpan has a height of 20cm and the width is usually upon the discretion of the operator of the abacus and it contained seven rods. In the upper deck of the abacus, each rod contains two beads and five beads on the lower deck. The beads are made out of hardwood and the shape is either rhombus or round.

The abacus has two types of beads namely: earth beads which are located on the lower deck and have the value of 1 in each of their column; heaven beads which are located on the upper deck.
